Gingham Fabric

Authentic, traditional gingham is woven from 100% cotton yarns, giving it a soft, breathable, and lightweight finish. However, because gingham is so popular for schoolwear and crafts, it is also widely manufactured as a “polycotton” blend (typically 65% polyester and 35% cotton).

Polycotton gingham is favored for school uniforms because it is highly durable and requires very little ironing.

While all gingham is a checked fabric, not all check fabric is gingham! True gingham is defined by how it is made: it is a plain-woven cotton fabric where dyed yarns and white yarns are woven together to create a symmetrical, overlapping grid of solid colour, white, and a blended half-tone.

Other check fabrics (like tartan or plaid) often use multiple colours, varying stripe widths, and different weaving techniques like twill.

No! One of the greatest advantages of true gingham is that it is a “yarn-dyed” fabric. This means the threads are dyed before they are woven together on the loom, rather than the pattern being printed onto the surface of the fabric later.

Because of this weaving process, the distinctive checked pattern is identical on both the front and the back of the fabric, meaning there is no “wrong” side to worry about when cutting your pattern pieces.

Because it is lightweight, breathable, and easy to wash, gingham is the definitive fabric for summer clothing—most notably classic school summer dresses, blouses, and skirts.

Beyond fashion, its cheerful, nostalgic appearance makes it a global favorite for rustic home décor, including kitchen curtains, tablecloths, aprons, bunting, and traditional picnic blankets.
